Choose a Domain You Control
A custom-domain URL shortener creates branded redirects such as go.example.com/offer. Use a dedicated subdomain rather than changing the main website hostname. This separates link traffic, reduces the risk of disturbing existing web or email records, and makes the purpose of the domain clearer.
- Choose a short, recognisable subdomain.
- Add it inside Short Links from the authorised installed account.
- Copy the exact DNS target shown by the app.
- Publish the record with the domain's DNS provider.
- Return to Short Links and complete verification.
Publish the Exact DNS Record
DNS tells browsers where the branded hostname should be served. Copy the record name and target exactly, without adding a second copy of the domain name. If the provider offers a proxy switch, follow the state shown in the Short Links instructions. Existing website, mail and verification records should not be removed.
Verify the Domain Before Using It
Verification confirms that the hostname resolves to the approved Short Links service. Only verified domains can be used for branded redirects and custom slugs. After verification, HTTPS is provisioned and renewed automatically; you do not need to buy or upload a separate certificate.
If the domain remains pending, compare the live DNS answer with the value shown in the app, check for a spelling error or conflicting record, and allow for propagation before trying again.
Create and Test the First Link
Select the verified domain, enter the full destination beginning with https://, choose a memorable custom slug, and add campaign or UTM information when it will be useful. Open the finished short URL in a private browser window before using it in a message or campaign. QR codes and privacy-conscious click analytics can then use the same approved link.
Important Product Boundaries
Short Links verifies control of the redirect hostname; it does not approve the destination's claims, content or legal basis. Link owners remain responsible for destinations, campaigns, consent and keeping DNS control secure. Domains, links and destinations are subject to security and abuse controls.
Custom-domain Questions
How do I use my own domain for short links?
Add a domain you control, publish the exact DNS record shown by Short Links, wait for propagation, then complete verification.
Do I need to arrange an HTTPS certificate?
No. HTTPS is provisioned and renewed automatically after successful verification.
Can I use the root domain?
A dedicated subdomain is usually safer and clearer because it avoids changing existing website DNS.
Why is my custom domain still pending?
The record may be missing, incorrect, conflicting, unexpectedly proxied or still propagating.
Can I choose a custom slug?
Yes, on a verified custom domain, subject to uniqueness, plan rules and security controls.
